My amazing weekend, Part 1: The backstory

My life has been chock full of surreal moments in the last 8 months or so.  Right now is one of them. I am sitting in an airport, by myself, about to board a plane to California.  I am about to spend the weekend with a very special woman, and a very dear friend, Mara. We have never met.

Our paths crossed in January, after she found out, at 18 weeks gestation, that her baby has anencephaly...that means there is a brain stem, but no brain.  After sharing her story with her friend Laura, who also knows Kyle (they all grew up in the same town, but Kyle didn't know Mara), Laura sent her to my blog.  She commented, I responded, then the emails, texts and phone calls began flyin'.  We are two moms whose hearts are in pieces. We are on a journey that no one would ever want to endure.  And, we are journeying together.  We have been able to share with each other thoughts, fears, joys and prayers that most others would not understand.  We have an instant bond and a unique connection that has been beautifully orchestrated by the God we love and serve.  I am so thankful for her presence in my life, and so so so blessed to be a part of hers.

For months, we have been saying all we really wish is that we could give each other a hug. That we could sit and talk and laugh and cry over coffee.  A few thousand miles difference makes that hard, but three weeks ago, she called the day before her birthday and said she wanted me to come, and she was going to help me get there.  So, we booked the flight.  My total weekend away will equal just over 48 hours, but it will be one of amazing blessing. We are going to celebrate the beautiful and unique lives of our babies, we will cry, and....we are going to the spa!  What girl weekend would be really complete without that?!

I will be blogging about our wonderful whirlwind of a weekend.  Check back later for updates on all that God has in store for us!
